A Brief Guide to Hutch's Guitars
A little look at the guitars Hutch plays – that is, David's guitars. I'm no guitar aficionado, just curious about all things Hutch and learning stuff as I do my searches, so if there are mistakes (or if I've totally forgotten some guitar scene) let me know!

Hutch's first musical moment comes in the tag of ”Death Notice” when he sings ”Black Bean Soup” with Starsky. He's playing the type of guitar you most often see David with in pics from this era: a roundbacked Ovation. This one is acoustic Folklore model 1114-4 (see Ovation's 1972 catalog: http:// www.ovationtribute.com/ Catalogues/ Ovation%201972%20Catalog/ Ovation%201972%20Catalog.ht ml).

When Hutch sings ”Loving Arms” in the tag of ”A Long Walk Down a Short Dirt Road”, he plays an Ovation guitar again, but this one is electro-acoustic (you can see the controls on the body, just above the neck). Hmm – would Hutch have owned two almost similar guitars – David certainly did, but it doesn't really sound like our Hutch, does it? :P Of course, this electro-acoustic one might have been on loan from the band – there's at least one other guy in the band playing an Ovation guitar.
Here's a better picture of David's electro-acoustic Ovation from ”David Soul Songbook”. I have hard time figuring out the exact model – it is otherwise just like the electric Folklore (model 1614-4), except the bridge and the truss rod cover have carvings that the catalog and any Google search I've done only show on model 1619-4, but that one has a differently shaped headstock: http:// www.ovationtribute.com/ Catalogues/ Guitar%20of%20the%20stars%2 0catalog/ Guitar%20of%20the%20stars%2 0catalog.html

Back at Hutch's, in ”A Body Worth Guarding”, he sings ”I Wish I Was” to Anna the Ballerina, and again he has his acoustic Ovation Folklore 1114-4 he played in S1 - just showing it from this angle here so you can see it lacks the electronic controls.
Or maybe I should say this is the same model as the S1 Ovation, but not necessarily the same guitar, as Hutch's guitar was supposed to have been smashed by Diana in ”Fatal Charm” (though of course what was actually shown broken was just some cheap thing). Right, there's plenty of room for theories here: maybe he switched the acoustic to the electric, that got smashed, and he got a new acoustic one...)

The two Ovations had nice mother-of-pearl inlays, too, but they still manage to look modest compared to the guitar ”C.W.” plays in ”Moonshine”! The guitar is apparently a Martin D-41 aka one of their famous ”Dreadnoughts”. We don't know if this is meant to be Hutch's own guitar – it seems to have been an impromptu idea, made on the road, to go undercover as a guitarist, so maybe he just rented it from someone? But, again, it's definitely David's own guitar – you can see him playing this or the Ovations in most concert videos that are on YouTube.

This last one is just to show that Ovation was a popular brand with these guys! I haven't checked which model this is though, but you can easily recognize an Ovation guitar by the fan-shaped tip of the head and the black, round back of the body.

The average in my family is about two or three guitars each. Two electrics (one an attractive antique, but difficult to play) and a shoddy inherited acoustic for me; an acoustic-electric, a classical, and an electric bass for my mother; a left-handed acoustic and electric for my sister; an electric and a five-string bass for my brother. I only just started trying to remember how to play this week and ow my fingers.

I was thinking Hutch has so little storage space in his apartment that he probably couldn't have two guitars and not have them stored somewhere visible. But there's plenty of space under the bed!
